Rosacea Treatment, Signs and Symptoms

Causes of Rosacea
Written by David Potter
Rosacea is a skin condition that affects millions of people around the world. It can cause the development of pimples that resemble acne. However, this is a completely different condition from acne. If left untreated it can even cause a buildup of tissues in the nose. This is called rhinophyma.  The buildup of tissues will make the nose become bulbous and enlarged. The only treatment for rhinophyma is cosmetic surgery. Rosacea can also make a person’s skin become greasy and they may develop small spider veins on their face or neck. Many people with Rosacea will also suffer from some kind of irritation in their eyes as well.

At first Rosacea appears as nothing more than a mild redness or flushing of the face and neck area. Overtime the other symptoms will begin to present themselves. Unfortunately there is no cure for Rosacea, but it can be treated. With a prompt diagnosis and treatment many of the harsher effects can be prevented. If left untreated the condition will only get worse making it very difficult for anyone with Rosacea to reverse some of the damage.

Researchers believe that there are several different things that can cause Roscea to develop in a person. It’s commonly believed that a major culprit may be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This is the same bacteria that cause peptic ulcers. A study performed in Japan found this bacterium to be present in 65 percent of all Rosacea patients. If a doctor believes the Rosacea is caused by this bacterium then they can prescribe antibiotics to combat it. Almost everyone that develops Rosacea from this bacterium can be effectively treated. In this specific instance it is possible to be cured of the disease.

Another possible culprit is a common house mite. These microscopic organisms are part of the spider family. They can be found on just about anyone since it’s very common for them to live on healthy skin. Not only can these little creatures cause Rosacea, but they are the primary cause of mange in dogs and cats. Almost 20 percent of people with Rosacea have these bugs. They also usually have a deficiency of riboflavin. It’s possible to increase the levels of riboflavin by simply taking vitamins. It is possible that a person can be almost cured of this disease by increasing their riboflavin levels.

Another major cause of Rosacea is exposure to the elements. Some will argue that it’s most often people who live in cold climates that develop Rosacea. However, the sun can be just as damaging to the skin as the cold can. Anyone that already has skin damage caused by the sun is more likely to develop Rosacea. The damage caused by the sun makes the tissues in the skin break down making it easier to develop other skin problems. Scientists also theorize that inflammatory cytokines from the immune system build up in the skin. The buildup can help to cause the outbreaks that Rosacea patients suffer from.

One of the biggest causes in all people that have Rosacea is stress. Every person alive reacts differently to stress. When their stress levels go up the body will naturally begin to produce more oil. As their stress levels continue to go up the body will produce more oil.  For a person with Rosacea the oil is a major problem. Even a very small amount can cause an outbreak to occur. Anyone that believes their Rosacea may be caused by stress needs to seriously look at what they can do to bring down the stress levels in their life. It might be as simple as taking a walk to cool off, or as difficult as changing careers. Every person needs to find their own path to stress reduction.

Some people also find their condition is caused by other external forces such as food or perfumes. It’s extremely helpful for anyone with Rosacea to keep a diary of their breakouts and what external factors where in the area when it happened. With time and some trial and error they can usually discover just what exactly is triggering their flare ups. Once they know what the problem is they can then take steps to avoid it. It might make changes to their diet or switching beauty products. This is an effective and easy way to reduce their symptoms without the need for prescriptions or surgeries.

There is still a lot of research that needs to be done before an exact cause of Rosacea is discovered.  It’s also possible that the true cause of this disease is never found.  All people that are afflicted with Rosacea can do for now is look for ways to manage their condition and prevent the flare ups as best they can.
